First (and hopefully last) trip to the ER

What a long day. I got a call from Alexander's daycare at 2:30 letting me know that he had a low grade fever. I picked him up and called the pediatrician. They had me come in and by the time i got to the appt, his temp had gone up from 100.6 to 101.7. During the weigh-in (13 lbs 14 oz.) i noticed Alexander had developed a slight rash. The doctor looked him over and suggested i take him to the ER to be looked at. Better to be safe than sorry when it comes to infants and fevers. At this point, the baby is crying (a lot!) but won't eat anything. Adam meets me at the hospital and we get admitted right away. After another weigh-in and temp reading, Alexander is given a dose of tylenol while we wait to see the doctor. The doctor comes in and lets us know that he will need to get an IV, have some chest x-rays done, have blood drawn and need a cathader to check his urine. The x-rays were quick, but Alexander was not happy about being laid out on a big table. I had to leave the room for the IV - there was no way i could watch that. I could hear him screaming all the way down the hall. After several attempts were made to run the IV line for the antibiotics, Adam insisted that they stop. They were able to give him a shot instead and he fell right asleep. After another hour or so of waiting, we were finally told that he had a virus (most likely caught from another child at daycare). It is called Herps-angina. It caused blisters in his throat, which was the reason he wasn't eating and what also was causing the fever. We were told that the antibiotic would kick out the infection and he would be back to normal in a couple of days. Needless to say, we have decided to keep him home from daycare for the remainder of the week.
